Far away from 90210, Matt Lanter dives fearlessly into swimming with sharks in Bora Bora, lampooning the Twilight phenomenon and dishing on why he’d never date an actress

Swimming with sharks may be a Hollywood cliché, but how many actors can say they’ve actually done it for real? Matt Lanter, for one. As a dozen blacktip reef shark fins circle our boat off the Tahitian island of Bora Bora, the 28-year-old star of 90210 pulls on his scuba mask and peers into the all-too-clear water below. “Not very small, are they?” he laughs as a 4-footer glides by. (Never mind the 10-foot lemon shark lurking even deeper.) “Well, here we go!” Thankfully, Lanter lived to tell the tale—and to have lunch with Watch! at the Four Seasons Bora Bora.

Watch!: Not bad. Have you done much stuff like this?
Matt Lanter: The most tropical place I’ve been is Cancun! Every time I look out at this view, it’s just like, “What?” I feel like we’re in Jurassic Park.

Watch!: Big time. So let’s start with 90210. Which girl do you want Liam to hook up with in Season 4?
Matt: Kissing AnnaLynne [McCord, who plays Naomi] is not a bad day of work. Nor is kissing Shenae [Grimes, who plays Annie]. There’s a lot of sex happening between Naomi and Liam, which is fun to play. But I think Liam and Annie have connected on a much more emotional level. That said, it’s 90210, so he could end up at any moment with any girl on the show.

Watch!: Or maybe two.
Matt: Or maybe two.

Watch!: Have you ever had two girls fight over you in real life?
Matt: Actually, just yesterday, here on the beach. [Laughs.] Kidding. I had a love triangle in high school. There was a girl I really wanted to be with, and she was with her ex-boyfriend, so I went with a girl that I was friends with but very attracted to. That’s why none of the stuff written for me on the show is all that foreign. I feel like we’ve all been through that, you know?

Watch!: But now you’re a 28-year-old playing an 18-year-old.
Matt: I know, I know. I do have a bit of an advantage because Liam is more mature than some of the other characters. An old soul. But it’s funny because I’m not even the oldest on the show!

The All-American Rejects are set to give the gang at ’90210′ hell, performing a single from their upcoming album at Liam’s bar, the Offshore, when the show returns in January. The Rejects will be popping up on the Tues., Jan. 24 episode.

Liam (Matt Lanter) decides to throw a big bash to re-launch the Offshore. Professional party-planner Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord), who is tasked with making it fabulous, hires the Rejects to perform at the party.

The All-American Rejects’ new album won’t be released until Spring 2012, but this is a fun way to get one of their first new singles, ‘Beekeeper’s Daughter,’ out there.

I’m sad to announce,that for those of you who don’t already know… 90210 fans will have to wait a little longer before fresh episode resume. You may ask why? This is because The CW is double-pumping its new reality series, Remodeled (premiering Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 9/8c), by slotting multiple original and repeat installments during its first two weeks on the air.
Ringer and 90210 fans will have to wait a little longer before fresh episodes resume. As a result, 90210‘s return has been pushed back a week to Jan. 17, while Ringer will now resume with new episodes three weeks behind schedule on Jan. 31.
